What do twelve famous optimisers really compute?
Hundreds of optimisation algorithms are named after animals. This book takes twelve of the most widely used ones and asks a simple question: once the animals are set aside, what does each method actually compute?
Every update rule is rewritten in one notation and derived line by line. Every closed-form result is verified numerically. Every claim is tested in 3,000 runs under one evaluation budget, with the optimum at the centre of the search box and away from it.
The answer is a classification that practitioners can use at once. Eight optimisers move by differences and do not care where the optimum lies. Four are tied to the origin and lose between two and ten decades of accuracy when it moves.
